The Brâncovenesc-style manor was built at the beginning of the 19th century by serdăreasa (ministress) Zinca Bălcescu, daughter of postelnicul (prime minister) Tănase Bălcescu. Early widowed, Zinca takes care of the entire family and builds the manor in order to house her youngsters: Costache, Marghioala, Nicolae, Sevastiţa and Barbu. The best known member of the family is Nicolae Bălcescu, historian, writer and an important figure during the Revolution of 1848 in Wallachia.
In the beginning of the 20th century, Radu Mandrea, the rightful heir of Bălcescu family, undertakes works of restoration to the manor and afterwards, in 1948, donates the domain to public administration, in order to become a place for artistic gatherings and study. Starting with 1968, ”Nicolae Bălcescu” Memorial Museum is established here, exhibiting works of decorative arts or pieces of furniture, but also personal effects of Nicolae Bălcescu and his family.
The estate, being currently under a long, but necessary restoration process, is still open for public visits, aiming to continue its cultural legacy.
